What is a clapperboard?

A clapperboard, also called a film slate, is a tool that is used to synchronize sound and image in motion picture production. It consists of a board, usually made of acrylic, onto which a pair of hinged sticks is attached. Usually operated by the 2nd AC (or clapper loader), the clapperboard contains important information to help the editors identify the shot.
